A cell wall is a structural layer that surrounds some cell types, found immediately outside the cell membrane. It can be tough, flexible, and sometimes rigid. Primarily, it provides the cell with structural support, shape, protection, and functions as a selective barrier. Another vital role of the cell wall is to help the cell withstand osmotic pressure and mechanical stress. While absent in many eukaryotes, including animals, cell walls are prevalent in other organisms such as fungi, algae and plants, and are commonly found in most prokaryotes, with the exception of mollicute bacteria.

जीवाणु एवं वनस्पति कोशिकाओं में कोशिका झिल्ली के बाहर निर्जीव, पारगम्य तथा दृढ़ आवरण को कोशिका भिति कहते हैं। कोशिका भित्ति कोशिका को केवल यान्त्रिक क्षतियों और संक्रमण से ही रक्षा नहीं करता है; बल्कि यह कोशिकाओं के मध्य पारस्परिक सम्पर्क बनाए रखने तथा अवांछनीय वृहदण्वों हेतु अवरोध प्रदान करता है। शैवाल की कोशिका भित्ति सेलुलोस, गैलक्टन, मैनन व खनिज जैसे कैल्सियम कार्बोनेट की बनी होती है, जबकि दूसरे पौधों में यह सेलुलोस, अर्धसेलुलोस, पेक्टिन व प्रोटीन की बनी होती है। नव पादप कोशिका की कोशिका भित्ति में स्थित प्राथमिक भित्ति में वृद्धि की क्षमता होती है, जो कोशिका की परिपक्वता के साथ घटती जाती है व इसके साथ कोशिका के भीतर द्वितीय भित्ति का निर्माण होने लगता है।
